Julia L. Miller
Julia Miller studied Modern and Mediaeval Languages at the University of Cambridge, lived in the equally beautiful city of York, and then taught English as a foreign language in the mountains of Portugal. She later spent many happy years as a lecturer in academic writing in Australia, collecting a research MA and a PhD along the way. Apart from interacting with some incredibly inspiring students, the most enjoyable part of her academic career was developing the free English for Uni website, with its humorous teaching videos featuring grammar detective Ms Parrot.
She writes in a variety of genres, but all her stories contain elements of intrigue, often with a dash of humour, and all have strong women characters.
Her first book, Crime and Prejudice, is a light-hearted Jane Austen pastiche in which everyone is a criminal. It has been shortlisted for the Comedy Women in Print prize 2025 (winners to be announced in November).
This is the place to list other author achievements, but teaching awards aren't relevant, and neither are translating and interpreting qualifications or academic journal articles. Julia's primary school tadpole swimming certificate probably won't work either, so let's wait until she's got some author accolades to add. She did have a poem about potatoes published in the Blackpool Gazette when she was ten. Does that count?
